Gerrymandering: How Politicians Rig Elections in the US! (2026)

The United States is currently in a state of political turmoil, with both major parties engaged in a vicious cycle of escalation. This situation is eerily similar to the US's ongoing conflict with Iran, where the two sides are locked in a mutually destructive spiral, with no clear path towards compromise. However, the issue at hand is not gun violence or bombs, but rather a toxic practice that the US is uniquely adept at: gerrymandering.

Gerrymandering, or 'redistricting', is the process by which politicians can draw their own electoral boundaries, unlike in Australia, where an independent body handles the process. This has always been a problem in the US, but in the past year, it has spiraled out of control. Both parties are flagrantly weaponizing it to gain an advantage, leading to a never-ending cycle of escalation.

The catalyst for this was Donald Trump's anxiety about the upcoming midterm elections, which normally go badly for the president's party. Trump's own approval ratings are putrid, and it will be nearly impossible to shift voters' ire onto the Democrats, who hold no power in Washington. As a result, Trump pressured Republican leaders in Texas to engage in gerrymandering, which would theoretically flip five seats in Congress to their side.

This move was met with howls of protest from Democrats and voting rights activists, but Governor Greg Abbott and the Republican-controlled legislature went ahead with the plan. The majority party can accomplish its objective in multiple ways, either by concentrating opponent voters in a few districts or by chopping up areas that tend to vote against them into little pieces. This results in a wildly unrepresentative system, where one party can turn a relatively narrow majority of votes into a massive majority of seats.

In California, for example, the Democrats won 60% of the vote in 2024 but 83% of the seats. The Republicans' 40% vote share earned them only nine of the 52 districts on offer. This has led to a chronic disenfranchisement of voters everywhere in the US, with conservative Americans in Democrat-run states having less representation in Washington, and progressive Americans in Republican-run states suffering the same fate.

The whole system is being degraded because neither party is willing to unilaterally disarm. Maybe Australia got it right by having politicians draw their own maps. This situation is a stark reminder of the importance of electoral fairness and the need for both parties to find a way to compromise and work together for the greater good of the country.
